AHH 01 HYDROLOGY APPARATUS

DESCRIPTION

This apparatus demonstrates some of the major physical processes found in hydrology, including rainfall and movement of water over land and rivers. The unit comprises robust steel frame stand mounted with wheels for easy transportation of the equipment on laboratory floor. A rectangular tank, made of stainless steel, is fitted on to it to provide catchment area for experimentation. This tank has a tilting arrangement with the help of screw jacking system. The tilt is adjusted by means of hand operated wheel/knob system. The tank has inlet and outlet connection for water. A junction of Nozzles in rectangular pitch is fitted on the top of the tank.  Arrangement has been done to operate any combination of nozzles for the rainfall simulation. The height of the junction of nozzles, is also adjustable upto certain limit to vary the density of rain over the catchment area.

The water  is  fed  to  these  nozzles  and rectangular tank with  the  help  of  a centrifugal  pump  connected  to  a  sump  tank.  A  valve arrangement  is  there  to  change  the  water  flow  through nozzles  or  direct  to  the  tank.  A  Rotameter  with  adjusting  valves  is  used  to  control  and  measure  the various  flows  into  the  tank or through nozzles. After passing through catchment area, water returns back to the sump, which make the unit re-circulating type, completely. The outlet water flow rate is measured by a weir arrangement with weir tank.

In the middle of the rectangular tank, two ‘wells’, for experiments with water wells, are provided. 20 pressure measuring tapings, provided in the catchment area are also exists to allow the end user to measure the water table profile. Each pressure connection in the rectangular tank has an arrangement to stop the permeable media entering its pipe line. These all pressure connections are connected to a bank of Piezometer tubes at the front of the catchment area. The apparatus is completely self-contained and needs only a mains electrical supply. The permeable medium is not included with the apparatus. End user can fill the rectangular tank with sand of 1mm to 2.5 mm to conduct the experiment.

EXPERIMENTS

  • Construction of draw-down curves for one or two well systems in a sand bed.
  • Hydraulic gradients in ground water flow.

UTILITIES REQUIRED

  • Electricity supply: Single Phase, 220V AC, 50 Hz, 5-15 Amp combined socket with earth connection. Earth voltage should be less than 2.5 volts.
  • Water Supply: Initial fill.
  • Floor drain required.
  • Sand:3m3. Size 1 to 2.5 mm
